where the cicadas emerged from

Last weekend Kyle and I were in northern Virginia to celebrate some family events.  We got a lot of quality time with my sister, which you’ll hear a bit more about in the coming weeks.  I was hoping to see SWARMS AND SWARMS of cicadas as I remembered another brood from 2004, but we only heard them and saw a few dead ones.

Yesterday we served lunch again at a local homeless shelter and then went to a party to welcome a friend back into town.  Other than that, it’s been a quiet week – pretty rainy with Andrea coming through!  Instead of our normal small group we had a potluck and tossed a frisbee around.

On the work front, Kyle and I both have encouraging but not yet confirmed news.  I saw some truly excellent results that I don’t quite believe so I need to replicate them ASAP.  I nearly cried when I saw them as I’ve bene stuck on this problem for about a year.  Kyle’s advisor heard some positive future indications on his funding situation, which means that Kyle might be able to stay on as a postdoc if he can’t find another job.  This is only a backup plan, though, but we might be living apart for less time than we thought if he’s not under pressure to leave.

I think you all should read to my post on not retiring early to read Lucas’s detailed comments.  He responded to every one of my points and offered his own budget and financial priorities as an example of someone pursuing FI while dealing with some of the factors I claimed would delay it.  I think he has a very interesting story!

You are invited over if you are ever up in VA again and have time. We were actually gone this past weekend anyway at a homeschool conference, as we are trying to decide on what to do for schooling for our kids 🙂

Hey, thanks Lucas. It would be cool to meet. We get up that way a few times a year but sometimes the schedule is packed – I will let you know if we are coming up and have some free time.

      1. Lucas says:

Yeah, I know the packed schedule problem. Offer stands if you are every around though 🙂

  5. […] Kyle and I are still talking through what we want out of our next place – we haven’t had much time alone together in the past couple days so we’ve had a lot of disjointed gchat conversations.  As I said, I initially wanted to go for a larger place for a potentially lower rent and Kyle wanted to go for a 1 BR.  I don’t really want to live alone after Kyle moves so the 1 BR isn’t very attractive.  Then again, finding roommates is a process and definitely introduces an element of uncertainty.  Kyle is pretty adamant that he doesn’t want a roommate while we’re still living together, which I can appreciate, and now that we’re fairly sure that he won’t be involuntarily unemployed.
