Awesome Comments and Posts 6-19Dec 2014

Winter break started early for us this year – we have already been in California for a few days! It’s been a working vacation so far as Kyle had to negotiate a few remote work days to be able to leave town so early, and of course my funemployment ‘work’ follows me everywhere (and I enjoy it!).   The last two weeks have consisted of holiday parties, basketball games, discussions¬†about my PhD PF talks, some volunteering, and … Read entire article »

Awesome Comments and Posts 15Nov – 5Dec 2014

It’s been three weeks since my last update but not a whole lot has gone on for us. Thanksgiving travel kind of dominated the period. Financial Peace University ended so I’m currently without a volunteering gig. Basketball season has been heating up – I’ve been to several games and we hosted one watch party. Kyle and I have had two meetings with a Personal Capital representative – more on that soon. ūüėČ Oh, and I … Read entire article »

Awesome Comments and Posts 1-14Nov 2014

The last two weeks have been pretty good ones around the EPF household!   Basketball season has started! I have my own season ticket this year to the men’s home games (in the past I’ve split one with other people) and so far Kyle has been able to tag along to games as well. We have some pretty amazing freshmen, though of course I try to not get too attached to those kinds of players. I resolved to make it to one football game this season as well, and it looks like it’s going to be the one against our Big (Basketball) Rival.   I gave my PF-for-grad students seminar this last Thursday. I think it went well, although it wasn’t as well-attended as the registration number had led me to think it would … Read entire article »

Awesome Comments and Posts 18-31Oct 2014

You know, being funemployed really makes it difficult to keep track of time and what I’ve been up to.¬†I often don’t really realize what day of the week it is until the evening when I go to my more-or-less weekly activities. What I’ve been focusing most on these past two weeks is my PF-for-grad students seminar – the first week I worked on making my slides and scripting it almost nonstop and the second week … Read entire article »

Awesome Comments and Posts 4-17Oct 2014

This is the first week of the newly reinstated round-up post! The purpose is to 1) give you some life updates on us that don’t fit into blog posts, 2) highlight great members of the EPF community and 3) point you all to excellent posts by other PF bloggers.   In the last two weeks, I interviewed for an internship I was really excited about and also found out that¬†I didn’t get it. ūüôĀ¬†I was feeling pretty … Read entire article »

Favorite Posts, Mentions, and Top Comments May 2014

May was¬†a very quiet month for me and EPF. ¬†Kyle’s defense took a lot of time and energy and now I’m working mega hard trying to make my defense happen by the end of the summer, so there hasn’t been much time for posting or commenting. ¬†Still, I have been reading/skimming my normal blogs, so I have gathered up my favorite posts from the month of May for you to enjoy, as well as the top comments left on EPF. ¬†Thank you all for bearing with me!     Great Posts This Month   Lance from Money Manifesto doesn’t want you to take and early or late retirement but rather periodic retirements.   Brian from Luke 1428 is becoming a stay-at-home dad!   Sam from Frugaling reveals how much he made off his blog in his first year (um… … Read entire article »

As much as I’m trying to focus on finishing my work and writing my dissertation, my ideas for PF related projects keep dogging¬†me. ¬†This month I attended a PF seminar for med students and residents as part of my university committee participation and then had a follow-up meeting on improving the seminar to be given to the grad students next fall. ¬†After that, I couldn’t get my various website and ebook ideas out of my mind. ¬†It didn’t help that I started listening to the Smart Passive Income podcast while doing labwork. ¬†Thankfully, so far I’ve kept myself from actually working on these projects, but they are so tempting!   Kyle got his official offer letter for his postdoc (in his current advisor’s lab, for the short-term). ¬†We’re so glad that the … Read entire article »

Favorite Posts, Mentions, and Top Comment Week of 9 March 2014

This week was an unusual one for me because I skipped my Wednesday night church small group meeting. ¬†ūüôĀ ¬†Kyle has been playing hooky from it for a couple months (thesis hermitage)¬†but I am an incredibly regular attender. ¬†This week I just wasn’t feeling up to the game night we had planned. ¬†Trying to get a date set for Kyle’s defense has been emotionally exhausting for both of us. ¬†The news this week is that he is 1) not able to find a date before this semester’s deadline (April 10) because of his committee members’ schedules and 2) he can’t defend between April 10 and the end of the semester for funding reasons. ¬†So now he’s looking at the second half of May but still doesn’t have a date set. … Read entire article »

Kyle is dissertating like a madman and it’s taking over our lives! ¬†He is literally attending zero activities outside of church and is working nearly every waking hour. ¬†He didn’t even watch The Big Rivalry Game with our basketball group last night!! ¬†(That is a huge sacrifice!) ¬†I have been feeling a little neglected and lonely (my primary love language is quality time) so Kyle took me out on a proper date on Friday evening, which was lovely. ¬†Well, being together was lovely. ¬†Our expectation for the restaurant was probably too high (some say it’s the best burger in Durham – I don’t think so but if it isn’t that’s kind of sad) and we were accosted by a homeless person as we walked back to our car which was … Read entire article »

Sorry for skipping out on this update last week! ¬†I was busier than I expected to be during our weekend trip to CA last week, even though I was waking up a couple hours before the rest of the household. ¬†To make up for it, this week’s post is for the last two weeks.   You guys can help me out by checking out a website we launched this weekend. ¬†My project on internships and other experiences has advanced and my group now has a website up with testimonials from PhD students who have had career-advancing experiences (the testimonials are in a Prezi – it’s pretty cool if you’ve never seen this type of presentation). ¬†Would you please 1) visit the site, 2) leave honest feedback, and 3) submit a testimonial of … Read entire article »
