Awesome Comments and Posts 4-17Oct 2014

This is the first week of the newly reinstated round-up post! The purpose is to 1) give you some life updates on us that don’t fit into blog posts, 2) highlight great members of the EPF community and 3) point you all to excellent posts by other PF bloggers.

In the last two weeks, I interviewed for an internship I was really excited about and also found out that I didn’t get it. 🙁 I was feeling pretty confident, so it was a bit surprising. I’ve also experienced some other passive job rejections in the form of not getting interviews (yet?) so that kinda stinks. But the upside is that I can continue to be full-time funemployed!

Last weekend I left town for a family event. It was on Friday night and Kyle didn’t want to miss work and his other events that weekend, so I went by myself for the first time since before we were married (I think). I traveled there on Thursday and came back on Sunday and you will hear more about that trip next week! Oh, and while I was there an article came out in my brother’s university paper about him winning a student contest for his recent invention, so that was pretty exciting.

I have to say, I’m so excited by the response I’ve gotten to my new EPF newsletter (top right sidebar! sign up!). I haven’t actually sent out an official newsletter yet, just an introductory email, but it’s sparked some great new connections with readers already! And I have lots of new ideas for posts now, thanks to them. I’m so glad I started the list. 🙂

amy pointed out on First Job Problems: Payroll Deductions Are Annoying! that the payroll fluctuations are following her into her real real-job life: “When I changed from trainee to faculty, I had significant increases in my salary, but also opted for significant deductions as well… I also don’t like how my incomes fluctuate slightly every paycheck (parking is deducted once a month, same for FSA, but I get paid bimonthly-so some checks are higher than others). After I cap out some taxes, my checks may go up a little.” She also anticipated what my post for next Monday is on: “I was in for shock for what my post-taxes, post-deductions take home paycheck was. It was no where near as much as what my gross income would reflect.” Thanks for the great comment, Amy!

I love taking candid photos but my siblings hate it! They already knew about the camera’s presence, but I still wanted a not-seemingly-posed photo. We ended up genuinely laughing about the process.

  2. Michelle says:

Sorry about the job search. I’m sure it will get better.

Haha love the photo! Thank you for the mention too 🙂

You’re very welcome. Thanks for writing the great post.

It was a very nice trip! I got to see a lot of extended family. I wish Kyle had been able to come but Thanksgiving is coming up fast!

  4. It really sucks to be rejected from that dream internship – especially when it doesn’t even pay, which just happened to me.

    1. Emily says:

Hey, sorry to hear that. But I’m sure you can come up with the next dream.

  5. I know for sure that there are other better internships for you out there Emily. Goodluck!

  6. Haha nice photo! I am sorry about the job search. I know how totally frustrating that can be. That’s awesome you are getting a great response to the newsletter. I just created a signup form for my site and it’s been great! Still need to send something out, but it’s nice to know people are reading.

I’m not concerned about the job thing as I’m not really looking for a job, just applying for stuff that comes across my path. 🙂

Looks like we’re at a similar stage with our newsletters! Best of luck with yours.

  7. I’m sorry to hear about the internship. Even so, I know you have some great things in things in the works so good things will come.

Thanks! I’m working a ton and I hope all of this will benefit others and myself!

  8. Too bad about the internship–bummer :(. But, your “fake candid w/siblings” is awesome. It’s like pulling teeth to get my siblings to pose for a photo (and yes, maybe I take a few too many photos, but come on people! memories!).

My siblings both claim they quite Facebook because I was putting up too many photos of them, but I think that’s just a cover. 😉 They don’t mind posing, it’s the candids they hate! I sort of dropped off taking photos toward the end of grad school so I’m consciously trying to start again.
