Blog Statistics Update July-August 2013
The big news for EPF this month happened just in the last week or so! Trent from The Simple Dollar linked to two of my posts, which brought a huge influx of traffic! Maybe a couple new commenters, too.
Analytics Data from July 16 to August 15, 2013
People who listen to us, as of August 15, 2013:
RSS subscribers: 157 (-22) (I think this is part of the fluctuations that always seem to be going on!)
Twitter followers: 514 (+42)
Facebook fans: 38 (+3)
Rankings:
Alexa: 110,119 (-28,829)
Google PR: 3 (no change)
MozRanks: 5.10 and 4.94 (no change)
Some Google Analytics statistics:
I think the pageviews and such would have increased over last month even without the bump from the links from TSD, but it’s hard to be certain.

Adsense revenue is back to normal levels after a small hiatus but we aren’t quite to $100 yet. Kyle also finally authorized hiring a professional-ish to design our header/logo but I think we’ll wait until we finally take a payout. New Republic Wireless signups have finally slowed down – maybe they will pick up again when RW finally releases a new phone model.
Search Terms from Real People
“how much do personal finance bloggers make”? Haha, that’s very dependent on the blogger! Most, like us, probably make zero or close. Many have a decent side income from it. Some make enough to live on and a very few get rich.
“didnot file 1099 for stipend is there a penalty” Most likely – if you owed any tax you will have to pay interest.
To all these searchers – if you’re married, keep joint finances!:
“keep finances separate or together”
“individual finances in marriage”
“whats better seperate or joint budget”
“bank account for discretionary spending marriage”
Searches that are RIGHT on for old posts:
getting a $3500 private party auto loan
how much does the average person spend on clothes annually
going to a restaurant and not order
how to reduce grocery expenses
Have you ever gotten a link from a high-ranking site out of the blue? How is your monetization going?

Congrats on almost reaching that $100 mark! One time I got a crazy influx of readers from reddit for a few days, and then that was it. I realized that it’s not a super sustainable way to grow readership.

I think we should cross it next month!
That someone linked a post of yours on reddit is pretty cool, even if the traffic didn’t last. I had a post of mine put up there and in a few other forums but it didn’t get crazy traffic.
My highest single day traffic was when the Consumerist picked up a post from Budgets Are Sexy that linked to me. I had over 1000 pageviews that day and probably another 1000 over the following month. That was back during the days of having an average of 10 daily pageviews.

I’m sure the links were valuable, though, even if the readers didn’t keep coming. But 2k views from one link is amazing!
I once got a lot of traffic from a direct link from the Consumerist. Good times! congrats on your TSD mentions.

That’s an awesome link! Good for you.
I don’t even keep track of my site yet… it’s all a little over my head. Hope to get there eventually so I can work to continually improve.

I didn’t at first either, but it’s pretty low-key to record a few stats once per month!
This is the first I’ve read of EPF, and I think its great that you’re diving so deep into the guts of a blog!
I like paying attention to the man (or woman!) behind the curtain!

Thanks, me too. I generally read blogs for the people behind them, not the information within. Hope to see you around here again!
I’m glad that you’re seeing increases, Emily! That’s a good feeling to know more people are reading your stuff.
May the good times continue!

Thanks! I hope it is people, although I find the search bots amusing as well. 🙂
Nice stats! You guys are getting some good traffic. I’ve been wanting to do a site re-design as well, but as of now I’m waiting to see if I can make the money to pay for it.

I think that’s the smart approach. You already pay for your domain and hosting, after all!
TFB linked to one of my posts about a month ago. That brought in a ton of traffic! I saw almost 500 hits that one day. It did the last time he linked to me as well. I’m not monetizing though and never plan to.

That’s an awesome link – congrats! I don’t think our traffic surge from those links moved the Adsense/affiliate needle at all, actually. 🙁
I’m still waiting for my first big mention. Until that day comes, I will focus on just slowly building up my google traffic.

Wow. They are some impressive comparative figures Emily.
Its incredible the impact that one positive natural link from a another popular site can have on your website traffic.
