Blog Statistics Update March – April 2013

This has been a fun month on EPF.  I’m happy to be back to blogging full time and being a bit more ahead on my editorial calendar.  I’m excited to be working on a big 4-part series of posts!

I am way more ridiculously excited about this than I should be – two people have signed up with Republic Wireless using my referral link!  If they stay customers for 30 days I get a $19 credit to my account.  I never thought I would be so pumped about not-spending $19!  Thank you, whoever you are!

Here is our data from March 16 to April 15, 2013.

People who listen to us, as of April 15, 2013:

RSS subscribers: 154 (+12)

Twitter followers: 344 (+42)

Facebook fans: 34 (+3)

Rankings:

Alexa: 132,627 (-42,266)

Google PR: 3 (no change) MozRank: 4.82 (-0.09)

That’s two months in a row that EPF’s MozRank decreased and I’m a bit puzzled!  Kyle thinks it might be that we switched our default URL from not having a www to having a www up front.

Search Terms from Real People

I’m so excited to see some air mattress search traffic!

“sleeping on air mattress in new apartment”

“moving out sleeping on a matress”

“just moved out sleeping on an air mattress”

There were tons of different searches from grad students on taxes and IRA contributions in the last month (not surprisingly).  Each of these search-ers spent ten minutes or longer on EPF!

“saving for retirement in grad school”

“grad student didn’t pay estimated taxes”

“nsf graduate fellowship roth ira contribution”

“do i owe fica on my graduate fellowship”

“define earned income, fellowship, roth ira”

“would a taxable university stipend qualify for a roth ira contribution”

“grad student no earned income investment”

And finally, one that made me go “hmmm.” “what do you think life may be like in ten years time?”

Did you switch around the www in your default url and what happened to your rankings?  Do you use referral links on your blog or only affiliate?

  1. Good stats Emily. I am waiting to test out Republic Wireless until they have the newer phones, but I will use your referral link. Anytime I have a website, I always start out with the www in front, so I can’t comment on what that might do. I use both referral and affiliate links in my posts. I don’t see any issues with that. I hope you enjoy the weekend.

Hey thanks for the future referral Grayson! I’ve heard from a few people that they are waiting for newer hardware before signing up for RW, but I’m glad people are excited about the business model. What is more lucrative for you, referral or affiliate? I would assume referral but I don’t have anything to compare side-by-side.

  2. I guess if traffic is increasing, it doesn’t really matter if rankings are going the wrong direction. Of course, I know that doesn’t help somebody that is analytically minded and likes playing with numbers!

DirecTV has both referral and affiliate available. Referral pays a bit more, but is over 10 months while the affiliate is a one time payment. And of course referral payments are a credit on my bill while affiliate payments are cash (well, PayPal).

If you treat all of your dollars the same, then it really doesn’t matter if something is a credit or a payment, but my different income sources have different purposes. A credit means less of my wife’s income gets spent and is put into short-term savings, while an affiliate payment goes into a bank account used exclusively for paying debt.

This last month was our second highest in traffic, I think – so it doesn’t monotonically increase.

I like to treat dollars differently, like you do – I think I’ll write a post on it!

I have a different mozrank for www and just rfi.com, you should check both!
actually I have no idea why my highest is rfi and not www and how you set one or the other as your main.

    1. Emily says:

Yes, I do check both but I track and report the higher one. The www one has increased but I don’t know by how much, and it’s still not higher than the no www one. Maybe I will report both so I can see the www one overtaking.

  4. Nice stats! Make sure that when you’re checking your search terms that you also look at where the post ranked in Google. If its not in the top 10, then go back to the post and see if you can optimize it to gain a better position. If you need help or want more explanation, feel free to email me.

I love the bit where you tell us what people searched to get to your site! Mine aren’t that interesting, but it’s fun reading nonetheless.
