July 2015 Money Puddle and Spending Report

July 2015 Money Puddle and Spending Report

This month was a BLOODBATH on the expenses side. (Get ready for a bloodbath next month on the income side!) Our actual accounts look even worse than this reflects, because we made a lot of expenditures that are going to be reimbursed. I’ve included the numbers for both the spending that we expect to be reimbursed and the spending we won’t have reimbursed, though I’ve only counted the spending we are responsible for against the … Read entire article »

Moving Cross-Country with a Pod

Moving Cross-Country with a Pod

In the last month, Kyle and I moved from a townhouse in Durham, NC to an apartment in Seattle, WA. While I initially had dreams of abandoning all our worldly possessions for this cross-country move, ultimately we decided to sell just our bulky furniture and move most of our stuff. We used UPack, a pod-based moving company, to move our things from Durham to Seattle, and took our car on a cross-country road trip to … Read entire article »

January 2015 Money Puddle and Spending Report

January was another blockbuster month for spending. I think we’ve set a new record for high spending month after month! I hope it is the last one for some time, though.   I’ve already addressed one of the big spending areas – new clothes! I bought a bunch of pieces for a new business casual wardrobe for my fellowship, and Kyle also bought two new pairs of jeans and spent what he called an Emily-level of money on them rather than getting them from Target (those kept wearing it super fast).   We also repaired and re-registered my car. I will probably write a whole post on becoming a two-car family (again), so for now I’ll just say that we spent about $1,000 on an initial repair and then another $200 when another warning … Read entire article »

Our New Money Management Issues

Our New Money Management Issues

Kyle and I are 1.5 weeks into living apart but managing money together. This post is on my initial observations on the money management implications of my move to a new(ish) city, living apart from Kyle, and being paid in a lump sum for three months of work. I’m sure that over the course of my fellowship how we manage our finances will change a bit and I will have new insights by the end.     Lump … Read entire article »

We’re Evolving!: Our Next Transition

We’re Evolving!: Our Next Transition

When we founded EPF in 2011, a major component of is purpose was to keep us financially honest during our several anticipated life transitions. Well, it took until 2014 for the first one to occur, but now we seem to be on a roll.   Transition #1: Kyle defended and became a postdoc in the same lab he did his PhD in. Essentially the only change was a salary bump.   Transition #2: I defended and became funemployed. The major change … Read entire article »

Virginia Sent Me to Collections for Dodging Taxes

Virginia Sent Me to Collections for Dodging Taxes

That sounds like an exaggerated, sensationalist headline, but it isn’t!  The commonwealth of Virginia thinks that I failed to pay the income tax I owed in 2009, and last month they sent my information over to a debt collector, who renewed the efforts to track me down.  Me – the personal finance blogger and tax reporting enthusiast – accused of not paying my taxes!   In this post I will detail this experience, which from my perspective … Read entire article »

Our Best (Pain-Free) Money-Saving Moves

Our Best (Pain-Free) Money-Saving Moves

In this post I will detail how much money we have saved (that is, not-spent) by making simple, painless changes in our life.  We really haven’t given up anything by making these choices, although sometimes the workarounds can get a bit creative!  I’ve ranked our choices from most money saved per year to least.     Moving Closer to Work While Reducing Our Rent   Two years ago, Kyle and I were living in a luxury apartment and we really … Read entire article »

The Cost of an In-Town Move Part 2

The Cost of an In-Town Move Part 2

Yesterday we finally received our refund from Time Warner, so our all expenses have been settled from our move in mid-September!  (6-8 weeks to issue the refund and 3 weeks to have it mailed.  Seriously??)  I can finally report what our in-town move cost and compare it to what we spent last year.   The two townhouse rentals are very similar – both about 1200 square feet, both 2 bedroom/2 bath, and about a mile apart off … Read entire article »

October 2013 Month in Review: Money

October 2013 Month in Review: Money

Our finances are almost settled after our move – we’re just waiting on a refund from TWC (isn’t it always TWC that screws you up?).  We spent a loooooot of money though – I’ll post about it once everything gets shaken out – so we’re going to devote our budget leftovers toward repaying ourselves until that’s done.   This has been a pretty quiet month for us in the regular budget but a big one in targeted … Read entire article »

Favorite Posts, Mentions, and Top Comments Week of 15September2013

Our week has been consumed with our moving activities.  We started our new lease on Tuesday and are ending our old one today.  A bunch of our friends helped us move our furniture and boxed-up items on Tuesday evening and every night since we’ve been bringing over a few more loose items.  We left the kitchen for nearly last, so that has totally screwed up our eating for the week!  I’m basically back on the SAD, which is interesting.  I haven’t eaten this way since late 2010 and it’s not a tasty as I remembered but also isn’t making me sick or anything.  Anyway I’ll post a few more (disappointing) details about our move this upcoming week and I’ll do a full money breakdown once all the bills come in.     Posts … Read entire article »
