Pretty slow week outside of work for us! We attended a talk by the former director of the NIH on translational research, which really got me jazzed again about doing science policy or something similar. We also prepared and served lunch at the homeless ministry we volunteer with from time to time. We’ve been working on the blog more this week and also trying to get a lot accomplished at work. We need to find some time to play some tennis!
Small update on my car: I have a confession. From last spring when we stopped driving my car to a couple months after we moved to our townhouse last August, I was really good about starting my car about once per week and driving it around the parking lot/complex. However, when the weather turned colder I got neglectful and stopped turning it on. And then after a few months I got afraid to turn it on because I didn’t want to find out that we had killed it! About a month ago I tried to turn it on again and failed and then we got really apprehensive. We both started keeping in the back of our minds that we might have totaled the car and would need to buy another one when Kyle moves on to his postdoc. But today we got the nerve up to try to jump start the car and it did start! It did not stay on, however, after we disconnected the cables. So we think the problem is just a super dead battery. That makes us hopeful that we have not killed my car and that we’ll be able to get it back into working condition when we need it again next fall-ish.

Kim from Eyes on the Dollar summed up how she thinks joint accounts could work for money management in long-distance marriage: “I think you could keep the joint accounts if you did have the mindset that $X can be spent without having to talk about it first. I think it would be hard for me if I was in the lower cost of living place and wasn’t familiar with the higher cost of living place… Good communication would need to be a must.”

Good luck with the car. Fingers crossed it’s just the battery. Thanks for including me and for liking my comment!

There definitely could be a secondary problem but we hope not!
That’s good it’s only a battery issue. Not too expensive to replace it I think. Could have been worse. Thanks for the link back 😀

I think we can even just get the battery charged for not much! As long as we can pry it out of the car. :/
Can you actually total a car by not driving it? I thought you’d just drain the battery, and then have to replace it… that’s good to know as I try to drive my car less and less…

We are probably overly paranoid, but you can clog stuff/rust stuff and definitely ruin the tires (which we are planning to replace anyway). I think if you drive once every week or two you should be OK. The internet doesn’t have a definitive answer as far as I can tell, but that’s what I decided on.
Thanks for the mention – I get into spurts commenting. I can’t work out how to get your posts emailed to me when they publish, so instead I come back and read (and comment) in one go on anything new that sparks my interest! If you can enlighten me on how I can ‘follow’ your blog (rather than specific posts) that’d be great!

Thanks for mentioning me 🙂
As for the car, it’s probably the alternator because that’s what keeps the car running after being started, the battery is just there to start the car and run the electronics. But should probably replace the battery as well after it sitting for so long. Good luck 🙂
Jacob @ iHeartBudgets recently posted..Our Vacation For Free On Credit Card Points
We replaced the alternator right before benching the car, so I hope that’s not it! Anyway I think the alternator would only come into play if we were actually driving the car. 🙂
Yeah, hope it’s just a battery issue with your car. If so, it won’t be that expensive. Thanks for the links.

We should get it running soon though to figure out if the battery is the ONLY issue!
