This week is all about watching March Madness!  My PI walked into my office when I had it streaming one time this week.  :/  We also saw Anything Goes at our local theater – Kyle really liked it and I thought it was pretty good.  On Friday night we went to a Grad Christian Fellowship gathering and hear from a bioethicist faculty member, which was fascinating and provoked a lot of great discussion afterwards.  Finally, one of our friends in Kyle’s program defended this week – congratulations Dr. S!

Mrs. Pop from Planting Our Pennies suggested a completely different tactic on my post on spending less when attending out-of-town weddings: “This might not come out right, but for us one of the best ways to save money on out of town weddings is not to go… At a big wedding, you might get to spend 5 or 10 minutes with the bride and groom… I’d rather buy a plane ticket to visit them at a later date.”  What do you think – is it worth it to attend weddings, or is it better to celebrate with the couple at another time?

  1. Our take on what financial independence is was on Monday. We’ll be talking about retirement definitions in a few weeks. As an expert, I can tell you that MMM’s definition of retirement is fine, but so is EVERY OTHER PERSON’S, so him trying to claim the term with one definition (that basically means financial independence anyway) is inappropriate. The experts have given up on trying to define retirement, so the most common definition in the literature is “self-defined retirement”, which means that yes, anybody can have their own definition. If you want more a more specific term, then there are many available, including financial independence (also pension receipt, ss receipt, unemployment, discouraged worker, bridge job, career-job retirement, and many more.)

thank you for the mention! I like the idea of celebrating with the couple at another time, but think I would be annoyed if my closest friends wouldn’t come to my wedding.. tough one.

It certainly would be best to have it both ways – which we have done in some cases but not enough!
