Welcome, Budgets Are Sexy Readers!
Thanks for visiting our blog! For my regular readers, today J. Money from Budgets Are Sexy has a guest post from me on my previous “side hustle” of participating in clinical trials and psychological studies.
As it happens, I did another study this very week! It was a follow-up to one I participated in a couple years ago at my university. I took a survey and then had my memory, vision, and hearing tested for 1.5 hours. I was paid $35. Not a great rate but not terrible either – and it’s certainly not taxing work! I’ve apparently turned my labmates on to signing up for these types of studies and they discovered a new source of listings: my university’s private version of craigslist! Alongside housing requests and furniture advertisements you can seek out clinical studies and even studies through the business school. I’m also attending a seminar this morning on the results of that genetic literacy trial that I participated in a while ago – it’s exciting to finally know their findings!
Just to orient you to this blog, recurring themes on Evolving Personal Finance are living well on a low income, transitions in young adulthood, and marriage. It is a source of both personal finance information (sometimes) and discussion (all the time) as well as a chronicle of my and my husband’s life through the lens of our finances. We are both late-stage PhD students who receive stipends – meaning that we have many years of experience in living on a low income (and a very refined budget). We are about to embark on our next big adventure, which includes a jump in income and likely a long-distance marriage for about a year.

Have you ever participated in a clinical trial/study?

Emily, way to go with a guest post over at BAS. You’re clearly doing what it takes to grow your blog. (PS, I should be hitting Alexa 200,000 in the next few days, so stay tuned!)
Anyway, I wanted to say that I’ve had fun with being part of experiments in ollege. There was one that I ran on a treadmill and tried to read text on a tv. I got my exercise in AND I got paid for it!

Now that I’m pretty ahead on writing my own posts I have time to spend writing more guest posts! It’s difficult to write those under pressure – for me, anyway.
That sounds like a fun and challenging trial! And like you said, it’s no extra time for that day if you were planning to run anyway.
I’ve never participated in any trials, but I’m always open to the idea. I have filled out a few surveys for my local university where they entered you in a raffle for a gift card. A few minutes work for a potential $25-50? Yes please! I’ll have to take a look around our local university’s website now that they’re opening a medical school. More opportunities like that might come up!

I used to do surveys but I don’t think the payout is very good… Unless, like in your example, only like 10 people did it. 🙂 Definitely with a medical school there should be more opportunities but it might take a few years for grants to start coming in for that sort of thing.
I’ve done focus groups, but never a clinical study. I wouldn’t be opposed to it, though, as long as there is no blood or medication involved. Will look into this more once I’m back in school!

I haven’t signed up for focus groups but it sounds interesting. What is the pay rate you’ve gotten?
I have only done one focus group before and I got paid $50. It was quite amazing! Wish I could do more of those. I would do them in a heartbeat.

How much time did you spend doing it? Was it fun? How do you find such opportunities?
