I Never Aimed for Self-Employment, But Here I Am
I am officially throwing my hat into the self-employment ring from now through summer 2015 (at least). I never thought I would be at this point, but over the last six months I’ve found something I really enjoy doing, and I want to see if I can earn a living from it. Kyle and I are also still anticipating moving in the near future (destination TBD), so it’s not a great time for me to … Read entire article »

Grad Student Finances Has Launched!
I just wanted to tell you guys that we now have Grad Student Finances online! If you remember, this project was supposed to be my passion project from last fall before I got absorbed in creating my comprehensive personal finance for grad students seminar. My concept for Grad Student Finances was for it to be a timeless resource for graduate students to help them with learn about how to maximize their money. For that reason, I … Read entire article »

Two Tiny Notes
Miss me yet? 😉 Just wanted to pop in with two bits of news. 1) You can get your EPF fix over at Making Sense of Cents today. Michelle published a guest post I wrote (pre-FinCon14 freak-out) on a budget-related method of motivating myself to earn side income in my funemployment. For September, I’m already up to ‘car gas.’ Leave me a comment over on Making Sense of Cents to let me know what you think of my idea! 2) I just learned I have an internship interview in a field I’m very interested in so please wish me luck! Even though I’m not job-searching, I seem to be job-applying. I’ve applied for three internships, a fellowship, a part-time contract job, and two full-time jobs in the past six weeks. Most of those … Read entire article »

Post-FinCon14 Soul-Searching on My Hobby
How I Developed My Hobby In the spring of 2008, I went on a handful of interviews for PhD programs in my field. The interview days consisted of meetings with potential advisors, information sessions about the programs, and social time with current grad students. While socializing, I fielded the typical getting-a-beat-on you questions like “Where did you go to college?” and “Where did you grow up?” I was also asked over and over again what my … Read entire article »

Funemployment Report: Goals for August 2014
My funemployment officially starts in September because I am still employed full-time as a graduate student through August. However, now that I am post-defense, I have the time to set myself up well to transition into funemployment. I’m going to attempt to document my funemployment through a series of goal posts. Just after the start of each month, I will report how I did on my goals for the month that just ended and set out … Read entire article »

Blog Statistics Update April – May 2014
This last month we finally saw the traffic decrease I was anticipating. You can see below that EPF’s views are down over 30%. I actually have been thinking that the cause might not be solely my reduced posting schedule but also in large part because I’ve virtually stopped commenting on other blogs. I don’t know if my comments elsewhere really drive much new traffic, but I think it encourages other bloggers to visit. I messed up … Read entire article »

Grad School vs. Blogging vs. Career vs. Money
It’s finally time to give you all a life update! As I’ve hinted a few times recently, there have been some big changes in our plans. Grad School Last week, my advisor made the official announcement that he is moving to another university at the end of the summer. He first alerted us to the possibility back in January, so I’ve had a few months to assimilate the news. At that time, he and I discussed it … Read entire article »

Blog Statistics Update March – April 2014
I actually stuck to my decision from last month to reduce my posting schedule even though it’s been really hard. In the last four weeks I’ve written six articles and done one roundup, when it used to be twelve and four. I miss writing as much as I used to and I definitely miss the greater volume of interactions with my commenters. But it’s actually really good that I made the decision to post less … Read entire article »

Blog Statistics Update February – March 2014
I’ve mentioned this a few times in the past, but this time I really think I’m going to do it… I want to reduce my posting schedule here on EPF. My Money Design’s post this week titled How Do You Really Want to Make Money with a Blog? really struck a chord with me. I’m motivated primarily by comments and serving my community. While I love the commenting culture on EPF, I don’t think it’s … Read entire article »

Rebooting
October 3rd, 2014 | 43 Comments
On the same day I posted that I was taking some time away from EPF and the PF blogosphere, I had a long talk with one of my good local friends who also reads EPF (hi AM!). She told me that it wasn’t surprising to her that I freaked out about my future with blogging after FinCon14, given that I defended less than two months ago and recently became funemployed and don’t know where I’ll … Read entire article »
