January 2017 Budget Report
January was a fairly quiet month around our house. We spent the first few days of it still in Virginia with my family, flying back on the 3rd. For the rest of the month I kept me and DPR almost completely housebound – it’s too cold and dreary for me to want to get out much. We did socialize a bit, but hosted our friends at our home instead of going out. If we were … Read entire article »

December 2016 Budget Report
Our major event this month was traveling over winter break. We stayed with my parents for about 10 days. Most of the time we were just spending time at home with my family, as DPR was all the entertainment we needed. My siblings hadn’t met DPR before so that was very exciting. Traveling for that period threw off our spending in a couple ways: we mooched off my parents for food so our grocery and restaurant … Read entire article »

November 2016 Budget Report
Over Thanksgiving, our family spent 11 days with Kyle’s parents in southern California. It was a wonderful and restful trip. Kyle had to use or lose a bunch of vacation days so we planned a long Thanksgiving trip and a long Christmas trip. After paying for our flights for both of those trips this month, it was a wonderful break to be hosted by Kyle’s parents and have all of our food and so forth … Read entire article »

October 2016 Budget Report
This month, Kyle and I finally FINALLY had the money management conversation(s) we had been putting off for so long. As a result, we are making some updates to our finances: 1) We are going to live off of Kyle’s income alone for our monthly spending, short-term goals, and long-term goals (retirement). We are going to use my income to fund our mid-term goals. This means that we are, for the first time in our marriage, … Read entire article »

September 2016 Budget Report
We’re still getting our feet under us in terms of our spending on DPR, but things are starting to normalize. Our large start-up costs are largely behind us, I think, and now we’ll just have some ongoing expenses to keep her fed, clothed, etc. One totally new expense for us this month was childcare! I had my first speaking engagement as a parent. I had an amazing day: my hosts put on a wonderful event and … Read entire article »

August 2016 Budget Report
I have to admit we have not been paying much attention to our spending in the last few months. That’s likely unsurprising given that we’re still adjusting to life with our new baby and we’re earning much more money than we used to. In fact, we’ve gotten a bit trigger-happy with our Amazon purchases in the last few months. It all seems to be needs, but then again we seemed to get by without these … Read entire article »

May, June, and July 2016 Budget Report
In this post I’m catching up on reporting our spending over the last three months. I was expecting to get through the May and June reports before DPR arrived, but as she came early they were deferred! May was an unusually social month as some of my family came into town and we went out of town for our family baby shower. DPR arrived at the end of the month. We spent most of June in the … Read entire article »

April 2016 Budget Report
April in Seattle was even more beautiful than March – way more warm, sunny days than rainy/overcast days, and quite sunny weekends. Each Saturday in April we went for a long walk in a new-to-us local park to exercise and see more of our city. We’re considering this lovely weather as “borrowed time” and do expect the rain and chill to return before summer really starts, so we’re capitalizing on it in the meantime. We also … Read entire article »

March 2016 Budget Report
Life in Seattle is really starting to improve for us! There were many days in March that had no rain and/or were quite sunny. Near the end of the month, it got above 60 degrees F on a couple days! The start of daylight savings time has also been amazing – sometimes Kyle comes home when it’s still light out! We are also slowly strengthening our social ties. Near the beginning of the month, we went … Read entire article »

February 2016 Budget Report
This was a humdrum month for us financially, except for overspending in some of our variable budget categories. We have basically just been working our new Seattle routine. The weather is definitely changing for the better; February was much warmer than January, and there are sunny and non-rainy days from time to time. We finished filling up our 2015 Roth IRAs this month – earliest ever! From now until April 15-ish we’re putting our retirement money in my … Read entire article »
