The only thing I care about this week is our housing situation!  We found out on Wednesday that we have to move out of our current townhouse and I spent the next 4 days freaking out about what size place to rent and looking for complexes and townhouses online.  I’m happy to report that Kyle and I decided on a place and submitted an application!  We should find out on Monday if we’ve been accepted and if we run a security deposit over we’ll have the unit reserved.

On Friday we viewed the townhouse for rent that is directly across the parking lot from our current place.  We thought it was the same as our current layout but it was different enough that we decided we didn’t want it.  On Saturday we viewed two units in the complex that I grabbed the numbers from for my post on Friday.  It’s a really popular leasing company in our area and these particular units were just down the road from where we are currently, which is awesome because we love the location and proximity to work.  (We considered them when we moved last year, but our current place just stole our hearts.)  On Saturday we viewed a 1 BR and a 2 BR model (the 2 BR we’ve seen before as several of our friends have lived in this size unit) and decided the 1 BR just had too small of a common space for both Kyle’s desk and a reduced version of our current living room.  The comments on Friday’s post really got me thinking about how we’ll be while we’re writing up (thanks so much everyone who weighed in) and we don’t think it would be best for our marriage to have so little space while Kyle is writing up because of our disparate study habits.  Also Kyle says he feels like a “real person” in a townhouse and not a “transient nomad” like he does in an apartment.  🙂

After we viewed the 2 BR we ran home, grabbed our proof of income and checkbook, and went to the office to apply.  If everything goes through we will be moving mid-September.  The people in the office didn’t give us any indication that anyone else had submitted an application for the same unit, but like I said before it is a very popular complex so there’s no telling.  But we’re really hoping that our application will be accepted and it will all be over except the moving itself!

Oh, and our rent will be $45/month less than it is now for basically same square footage.  Woohoo for rent reductions quickly paying moving expenses!  I’m really proud of us for making a quick commitment and not dragging this decision-making process out for weeks.  We are not quick decision-makers as a rule but we had most of our research in place after living here for 5/6 years and looking last year.

E2 had some great insight into Proverbs 22:7 on my post on not feeling like a slave: “I think that in our culture and time, debt makes you a slave just like work makes you a slave. The Bible wasn’t written at a time when most free people did wage labor for others whose disapproval could mean losing house, home, security, etc, which is worse than what most people risk from non-mortgage debt. But it’s pretty rare to be able to be totally independent, whether in the Marxist sense of owning your own means of production, or the PF sense of financial independence. I think debt is part of this equation but frankly, it’s different from “not being rich” in degree, not in kind. And the Bible’s pretty understanding of ‘not being rich.'”

  1. All the best on the new digs and I hope you get the place. I always get re-energized a bit when we move to a new place…there’s something cool that happens when we change surroundings & routines. Everything’s new again, even the old stuff.

    Cheers!

I read your last post with interest, but didn’t comment cause… I was moving house! Namely the BF into my place, and in a week, we get our keys for the new place. Like you, we found something we loved and in a way, rushed our application. We were great applicants and accepted pretty early last Monday! 😀 Now to find someone to live in my house… whilst I have half the BF’s furniture hanging out… If I wasn’t exhausted, I would have taken photos of it!

That’s a lot of transition! Good luck finding a good tenant.

  3. Living with your carpool mate does make it a lot easier! Did you and Kyle ever have a discussion on how to divide the driving or has one of you done most of the joint-driving throughout the relationship and just kept up with the status-quo?

Kyle enjoys driving more than I do so he drives whenever we’re together. We are also exclusively using the car he brought into the marriage.

  4. Goodluck with the new place. When we bought our we literally moved 2 blocks away from our last apartment. Moving is such a hassle so being so close made things feel easier. Thanks for mentioning my post. Hope you had a great weekend!

That does make things so much easier. You can keep your same routine – errands to your nearby stores and so forth. Kyle was REALLY excited by the idea of just moving across the parking lot because we wouldn’t even have to rent a truck!

Hey guys! Just wanted to update you that our application was accepted and we submitted our security deposit (with a $2 service charge, boo) this morning. So we have our official move-in date and all – except we aren’t signing the lease until that day, which I think is a bit weird. Anyway it’s all settled now and we just have to execute the move itself.

  11. Thanks for the mention, and best of luck in your new place. I would kind of feel the same way about an apartment as Kyle does. It’s been a while, but the last apartment complex I lived in had razor wire around the fence, which makes you feel right at home.
