Awesome Comments and Posts 18-31Oct 2014
You know, being funemployed really makes it difficult to keep track of time and what I’ve been up to. I often don’t really realize what day of the week it is until the evening when I go to my more-or-less weekly activities. What I’ve been focusing most on these past two weeks is my PF-for-grad students seminar – the first week I worked on making my slides and scripting it almost nonstop and the second week … Read entire article »

This week Kyle and I went to two basketball games! We’d only been to a couple so far this season because we drew so many ACC games. We ended up with two Ws but one of them was a nail-biter, so that was fun to be present for. We were able to bring friends from our church small group to both because there’s a very generous guest policy in place right now. I had an idea for a new website a week or so ago and this weekend Kyle and I bought the domain! It’s not a blog, just a little side project. I’m excited to announce it here when it’s ready to go up and I hope you all will contribute to it and/or help promote it! That’s all I’ll … Read entire article »

I Don’t Work for the Money
I often read in the PF blogosphere about the importance of achieving financial independence through the generation of passive income streams. Some bloggers will go on to explain that until we achieve FI, we are trading time for money, and time should be recognized as a more precious resource than money because it is non-renewable. I turned over the phrases “trading time for money” or “working for money” while Kyle and I traveled for Thanksgiving. (Aren’t … Read entire article »

More of the same this week, so nothing new to report! Work is coming out of our ears. I’m probably going to be working quite a lot through the first week in December, and who knows when Kyle will let off the gas on writing and editing his dissertation. Another uneventful week for us – I’m still doing my normal activities and Kyle is still thesis-writing like a madman. I’m trying to get some work out to my collaborators but it hasn’t been going terribly well. The timing of this retreat that I’m on (I’m in Wilmington, NC!) wasn’t the greatest for that reason, but isn’t that always how it goes? I’m happy for the break in routine! I have a guest post up at Get Rich Slowly this morning – please check it out and leave me comments! Posts I Liked My Money Design shows graphically how to prepare for early retirement with savings, investments, and passive income. Robert from The College Investor retells in detail how he set up his will and trust. Michelle from Making Sense of Cents is considering long-term … Read entire article »

I am finally taking a step back from my crazy work schedule! This week was much more relaxed. I was on my feet most of the time I was at work, but I didn’t stay super late any evening and I’m not going into lab at all this weekend! We had a very nice week socially. Last Sunday we went to a bring-your-own-lunch pool party at our friend’s house. That was the first time I’d been … Read entire article »

I kept up my intense work schedule all this week but I am taking this weekend almost completely off! I’m just going in to take some quick timepoints and feed my cells. I’m going to scale back to a much more normal schedule for a while because I really ran my body down by not resting and sleeping enough. Other than that, not much is going on! Kyle went to a bachelor party on Saturday so … Read entire article »

As I anticipated, this week has been consumed by work work and more work. As often happens in these stressful times, something piled on top – Kyle came down with a cold and then gave it to me! Being in lab all day Saturday with an achey chest and stuffed nose is no fun! I’m falling behind schedule on meeting my deadlines so I need to push even harder this upcoming week to get it all done. 🙁 The one bright spot in my week (which Kyle unfortunately missed because of his cold) was the potluck we had in place of our normal church small group meeting. I got to eat a ton of delicious food (mmmm crab dip) and ended the evening sitting around a bonfire talking about life’s big … Read entire article »

Kyle and I have been working crazy a lot this week. I’m still on schedule to meet my deadlines and it should only be another week of being very busy if things go well. I have given myself enough slack time to be able to recover if things don’t go well, which I’ll know early next week. This summer has really been wonderfully productive and I’ve implemented some good habits that I hope will carry into the school year! We received notice along with everyone else in the country a couple weeks ago that TWC is increasing our modem rental fee. When we moved last year we debated buying our own modem but decided to hold out for when we moved cross-country, but this increase in the rental fee changed the … Read entire article »

Hand in Hand: Lean In and Getting to 50/50
After learning about Sheryl Sandberg’s message to young women from the extensive media coverage of her TED Talk and other speeches, I knew that I should read her book Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead. I saw myself in her comments about 20something women who tone down striving for advancement in their careers when they start thinking about reproducing. Little did I know that while waiting for her book to arrive, I … Read entire article »
