Weekly Update 32

We are in Canada!  Hamilton, ON, to be precise.  We are attending a friend’s wedding basically all day today and tomorrow we are visiting Niagara Falls!

This past week was full of work and unpacking.  We had a major disappointment, though.  Because of this wedding we’re attending, we weren’t able to participate in our university’s process for qualifying to buy season tickets to the men’s basketball games, and our exemption request was denied.  Attending the home games has been a major portion of our social life and entertainment for the past five years so we are very disappointed to not be able to do that this year.  We’ll still watch the games on TV with our friends, but it’s just not the same as being there in person.  A very, very small upside is that the $200 we had earmarked for the tickets can now be used for another purpose.  Kyle actually suggested getting cable so we don’t have to jump through so many hoops to watch the games, but adding that service would quickly eat up that money.

My Money Design answered my question of whether tightwads/spendthrifts can really change by drawing an analogy: “Just like losing weight or exercise, if you see the benefits of the discipline and hard work, and focus on the end goal even after you’ve reached a place where you’ve mostly won, you’ll want to stay there and continue those good habits.”

No, I haven’t. My husband and I eat differently so we don’t meal plan – well, we just eat the same things all the time so it’s sort of a plan. Anyway I am very particular about my food and even their customized meals don’t fit me exactly. I like the concept a lot, though.

Have you ever been to Canada before? Do you like it?
    Cheers!

I visited Vancouver briefly several years ago (as did Kyle a couple years ago for a conference) but this was my first time on the east coast. Toronto and Hamilton didn’t strike me as terribly different from big cities in the US. Except, as Kyle reminded me, for the health care, which we thankfully didn’t access. Oh, the other thing we noticed is that cashiers actually check ID when we used our (unsigned) credit card, which we are not accustomed to.

  3. […] Last weekend Kyle and I went to the wedding of one of our graduate school friends in her hometown of Hamilton, ON, Canada.  This trip was not nearly as frugal as our trip to Chicago earlier in the summer because we flew, which in itself is more expensive than road-tripping plus we weren’t able to bring our food with us.  In fact, we made some poor food choices because of hunger and convenience and such.
